Well done Dell

It seems that the 19-day wait I had to get a decent response to my failed hard drive touched a nerve - this morning a 60GB drive turned up, rather than the 48GB I was expecting.

Of course, I still had the annoyance of trying to install Windows (has to come before Linux... Windows' MBR handling is poor), hampered again by the fact that the nv4 driver for the Geforce 2 Go absolutely sucks, dropping into an infinite loop at random intervals. Very annoying when you're trying to download a working driver!

I got it working before, but I just installed the Nvidia driver from their site, and the problem remains.

Add to that 44 Critical Updates, 24 Updates, and a driver update and there's a fair amount to do - and that's before restoring data and applications, and installing Linux.

*sigh*

Also, I'd like to bid an academic farewell to Matt; moving on to pastures new after finding that a PhD was not for him. Best of luck old boy.

Blogging as Punk

Stavros the Wonder Chicken catches fire with his vigour. A spirited defence of "punk" blogging.

Enough to make me want to actually write something, rather than my usual terse summaries!

World's Worst Joke

From ongoing (and it's both awful and awesome):

This one concerns a pirate's parrot who got a bad case of sunstroke and was heard crowing Pieces of seven, pieces of seven. Which was clearly a parroty error.

Do nautical geeks even exist?

Magic Smoke

From bbum's code and rants:

My TiBook doesn't have firewire any longer. The magic smoke in the FW controller chip escaped in a rather cataclysmic event some time ago. Once you let the magic smoke out, electronics just never work quite the same, if at all, afterwords.
