And the best response to a Slashdot comment for January is...

In a thread about Linux distributions:

I use Gentoo; how does this affect me??

We'll tell you when your compile finishes.

... and then it was over.

The dust settles on the wastelands of Karnuk. A blood-red sky glowers down on the last few dying Tasks, their heathen God defeated.

Lord Richard drops his bloodied axe, baffled at his victory. Just before being overwhelmed by the Armies of Nonsense, the Lightning of Twice Re-Pairing struck, leaving the way clear for him to take the throne of Being Able To Fucking Sync For Once You Twatting Phone.

Truly this day is blessed.

However, I'm still trapped in the City of Ennui. Matt's departure has put me into a little bit of a funk; I'm beginning to wonder why I'm doing a PhD, and what the point is other than to kill time.

Of course, I realise the downside of going in to work, but if a small company doing something interesting (or even a large company) came to me and said "24 grand a year, flexi-time; here's a goal, you choose the implementation" I'd seriously consider it. If there's one thing I need, it's a bit of direction.

I think that's why I enjoyed my undergraduate degree so much; it was simple stuff, quite interesting, and with some straightforward, set problems that I could chew on, putting the effort into solving them with panache, rather than muddling through. At the moment, I'm having to decide what to work on, and originality is very important. That's a challenge.

*sigh*

OK, this sucks

I've managed to fix the contacts on the P800 - but now it still wants to delete 129 items on my iBook.

If I agree, I end up with no tasks on my iBook.
If I reject it, I don't get to sync.

Neither of these choices is acceptable. What ever happened to dealing with conflicts individually? I'm starting to miss ActiveSync. Which is crazy.

Duplicate P800 tasks

Yesterday I tried to sync iSync and my P800, as I hadn't for a few days. Having been prompted that 130 items would be deleted on my iBook, I cancelled and did a "Reset All Devices".
Having put in the time to re-categorise my contacts, I noticed that all of my tasks were duplicated!

I just reset again, and they're still duplicated, even after I deleted the dupes by hand. Conclusion: the resetting process doesn't delete tasks on the P800, only calendar items.

I've just emptied the P800's Tasks list, and I'm performing another reset of iSync's "Calendar" option (fortunately the checkboxes for Calendar and Contacts apply to a reset - I'm getting fed up of re-recording voice dials and setting speed dials after resets). Hopefully that will work.
