DEVONthink

DEVON technologies have released DEVONthink 1.8, and it's great. The textual content can now be treated as a Wiki — links to other texts, to folders, to images, all inside the text — with static and dynamic links. Very cool.

They also say that they've improved performance by 4–20 times, and I believe them. Startup is devastatingly quick, you can now re-optimise your database (reimporting everything), and even the window loading is faster.

Great application, and fantastic value. This is the kind of development I'm very glad to support!

DEVONagent has also hit the next version. I'll have to see how that's changed too.

Strangers When We Meet

Steely resolve
Is falling from me
My poor soul
All bruised passivity
All your regrets
Ride rough-shod over me
I'm so glad
That we're strangers when we meet
I'm so thankful
That we're strangers when we meet

Still probably my favourite Bowie song; beautiful lyrics, heartwrenching piano, emotion of a unfeined clarity that is rarely apparent in his work.

They key, of course, is he's not glad at all.
Curiously, Hanif Kureishi, notable for The Buddha of Suburbia, has a short story called Strangers When We Meet. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Leave my feet alone!

Boing Boing once again destroys my faith in my own mind.

While sitting in your chair, lift your right foot slightly off the ground and move it in clockwise circles. Now draw the numeral 6 in the air with your right hand. Your foot will involuntarily reverse direction.

I did this, thinking I'll be able to do it, it can't be that hard — bollocks. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Fooled again by my own mind!
