Windows XP, Backups, and Projects
I just got round, finally, to restoring my October Windows backup — well, it's 50,000 files through, but near enough! Lessons learned:- When you know your hard drive is failing, back up more frequently than bi-monthly.
- This goes for my new iBook too — I haven't backed up this little monster since I restored onto the new drive. This is a bad thing.
- Never trust drivers — the only driver that wouldn't cause the Geforce2 Go in the Inspiron 8100 to hang Windows was the one available from Dell's support website.
- Back up all your OSs, not just Windows. Goodbye, bookmarks. Goodbye, emails. Goodbye, Linux applications. Goodbye, data.
First Encounters is probably my favourite ever game. Superb. I'm now hunting for a Mac port — I know there was an effort to reverse-engineer the binary and recompile it for more modern systems, but I've lost it, and the best candidate I've found has been pulled.
Hardwar I bought many moons ago. It's good, pretty and playable, but I never had the time to devote to it. I'm pleased to see a community still extant.
Which brings me to thinking about projects I'd work on if I won the Lottery and didn't have to work.
- A space game/engine, child of Frontier, Lander, and Hardwar.
- A knowledge base application, allowing me to easily work with and link all of my contacts, photos, documents, etc. Haystack is on its way, but I want more!
- Everything in my Code section, over there.
