Safari rendering problem
I've been noticing this for some time now — I don't know if it happened with Panther, or a Safari upgrade, or something else, but it's bugging me:
Any thoughts, anyone? Happens a lot, and persists until that region is scrolled off the visible display.
Update, 2004-02-11: Actually, this happens in text fields as well, and possibly other places. Bloody annoying.

Waiting for SuSE
Well, I've been shepherding a
SuSE 9.0 install on my laptop now for well over a day. It's 1.5GB over
FTP, which makes it seem understandable — however, the reason it's taking so long is that every few packages it fails to find one, so I have to write down which one (e.g. the damn
kernel), click
Retry
(so that it will reconnect and make the next package work), then click
Ignore
.
When I go out for dinner, then, leaving the laptop on (because you can't pause the install), for 95% of the time it's sitting doing nothing at all, having popped up a dialog 5 minutes after I left.
Solution:
automatically skip failed packages, try them again at the end, and log them. Don't expect the user to monitor a process which on my connection would take a theoretical minimum of
7.5 hours. The exact thing happened on my tower: I had to boot using the install disk, and manually download and install the kernel and X myself. Nasty. I don't enjoy doing it again.
