Failure

I hate Gantt charts. Not a single program I've found will actually let me do resource balancing. So I resolve to try Microsoft Project, which I think does have it, and allows task splitting etc.

Now, bear in mind I have a legitimate license for Project Professional 2003.
  • The downloader I have for it only works on the campus network, on Windows machines. Whatever happened to ISOs?
  • The campus VPN requires prior registration. I can't even borrow my supervisor's, because he's in Spain.
  • I can remotely log-in to the University network, but the Unix machines can't access Samba filesystems. I can actually SFTP to the machine holding the ISOs, but it appears to be empty (only exported through SMB).
  • Tunnelling doesn't work
Short of getting in my car and driving in, I can't get them from the University. BitTorrent is also letting me down — very frustrating, given that I'm actually legally allowed to use the software!

Who would have thought it would be so difficult to get a proper Gantt chart done without just drawing it by hand? I've been tempted a number of times to write my own software in a couple of hours, but I know it's not a real solution.

Drat!

I will have to resort to trying to use Project to do the whole thing tomorrow morning.
