Snow

I can't believe I just made a snowball off the roof of my car. In the middle of March.

iPod tomorrow!

Nasty painful funny

Ah, reminiscing on one of the boards I read:

The last time I had to open a bottle without an opener was several years ago, in a ratty little Goth club. Before I could demonstrate my handy stamp the top off technique, a fresh-faced student offered to open it with his teeth — I've done it loads of times!

The look on his face as he stood there with blood and bits of tooth all down his chin and an unopened bottle in his hand was a picture. Then I stamped the top off the bottle. When he said It'ff nefr dun dat deforr… in a hurt and confused tone, we all laughed so much that Hell is now merely a formality…

Making LyX's fonts not suck

If, like me, you use LYX on Mac OS X, with teTeX installed through Fink, you'll want to make your outputted PDFs not look like ass.

Look here for what to put in your files. Then, when you get an error, look here for how to install the fonts.

For me, this was:
  1. Download this
  2. Open a terminal:
  3. cd ~/Desktop; open lm.zip; sudo cp -R lm/* /sw/share/texmf; sudo texhash; sudo /sw/bin/updmap --enable Map lm.map

  4. I also found it necessary to do:

    sudo /sw/bin/updmap --enable Map cork-lm.map

because my fonts were invisible in the output, and pdflatex was complaining about that font.
Much better.

Blimey

Well done eXpansys: 33 minutes between receiving the order confirmation and receiving the shipping confirmation! They must have dashed down to the Post Office!

I'm experiencing a little bit of buyer's remorse: the Neuros player is far cheaper, plays Ogg Vorbis, has recording and FM broadcasting, etc; the GMini by Archos is smaller, cheaper, and more featureful; the 40GB iPod is fat, large, and expensive compared to the 20GB. But I'm sure I'll enjoy it nonetheless!

It will be the first time that I'll have had a totally unrestricted playlist whilst on-the-go. Now I want a line-in for my car stereo…

iPod!

£349 of audio pleasure, winging its way towards my door. eXpansys, bless 'em, are actually undercutting Apple's education pricing on the 40GB iPod, and I couldn't hold back.

Forgive me.

I do wish it weren't fatter and heavier than the 20GB, but I will enjoy being able to fit my entire iBook hard drive onto it with room to spare.

ROAR!
