Stupid, stupid companies

In the interest of company standardisation, our bookshop has just scrapped its electronic stock management software in favour of… guesswork. That's right: a customer asks if we have a book, and we guess. We just walk to the shelf and have a look. This, of course, is massively efficient, and takes full advantage of years of work in computerised stock control.

We now have countless different unconnected systems for stock management, tills, and searches, and none of them will tell us if we've got a book.

I'm absolutely enraged. My job is now harder, and it's as if God is taunting us — there have been dozens of customers today who have asked specifically if we could check on the computer, then gone away frowning.
