Interesting point about the GPL

Some chap at Sun, Jeff Dillion, has written an interesting blog post about the GPL and service provision.

Google does not "distribute" it's software in the ways that Richard Stallman and others were originally thinking. In fact, they don't distribute their software at all. Google only distributes the service. This means that any online services company can use all the Open Source work they want without ever giving anything back. This was not the original intent of the GPL.

An intriguing point. Of course, people pick their licenses; from the BSD license through to proprietary code. But it's certainly true that Google are distributing the functionality of programs without distributing the programs themselves.

Well spotted, that man!
