Quasi-religion

After every major sporting (well, football) event, radio talk shows lament the national obsession. Just today, I heard a clergyman saying “football is now like a modern religion, and I think that's harmful”. I wonder if it has occurred to him that it's no different to an ‘actual’ religion?

The danger with both is that people become overly obsessed to the point of no longer making rational decisions. I see very clear parallels.
