Microsoft Project

Even ignoring the total inadequacy of the Gantt chart in planning an exploratory research project with one resource (namely, me), the technique has a number of problems.

Of primacy to me is resource levelling. This is the method whereby scheduling one resource equally across two tasks doubles their respective times — i.e. the resource is levelled across the tasks. For a project such as mine, this is vital, and flawed; every task is performed by me, and has to be scheduled and levelled. The slightest flaw and the Gantt chart goes wild.

This just happened, in fact; because of one apparently unresoluble conflict, I have a 45 year gap between two tasks. The chart just scrolls off to the right. Picture this:

TaskDurationStart
Ontologies~30 days05/10/04
Proof-of-concept applications~60 days20/01/49

Why, Project? Why?

I'm not convinced.
