Impossible decision

Yes, I know I'm carping on about the Z1010, but that's the way I am when I'm close to a purchase!

Flaws:
  • Big
  • Only one email address and four numbers per contact
  • Non-smartphone: limited to MIDP2.0 apps
  • Only 4MB internal RAM (even the K700i has 41MB!)
  • Memory Stick Duo (32MB included)
  • Code memo limited to 10 items — no match for Handy Safe
  • Calendar doesn't really support all-day events
However, it does sync with iSync and do all sorts of other cool things (like do proper Bluetooth file exploring, video calling, T9, etc.).

What to do? It's a great device, but I don't know if I'd run into its limitations. It's quite possible that I would get annoyed with its size, its inadequate contacts, its battery life, or its dependency on MIDP to do anything non-stock.

Oh well. To cap it all off, Orange haven't even listed the X700 in their catalogue yet, which points to a release date in December. Pretty depressing!

Lisa, on the other hand, got offered new-contract bonuses (such as free messages) if she'd upgrade rather than cancel, so she took that. Clever kitty!

Best use of a videophone

They do make a handy mirror! Switch the large view to you, turn on mirror mode, et voila!

I do find that the lanyard loop on the Z1010 gets in the way: the external camera is stupidly on the bottom half of the phone, so you put your finger in front of it anyway, but putting the lanyard loop right next to it is also pretty dumb. Still, I do like the phone. The tiny external screen normally shows date/time/network status/battery, but pressing a volume key shows

Date: 02-Oct-04
Profile: Normal
Model: Z1010
My mobile: 07xxxxxxxxx

for a couple of seconds. Very handy for people who can't remember their number!

The Z1010 also syncs well with iSync, but it has one organiser-related flaw: contacts can only have 1 email address and 4 phone numbers. Sorry, Anthony — you'll only be getting emails at work! This I find hard to believe: I mean, I have (and use!) at least 4 email addresses, and I have others. Most people will have 2 (home and work). I wonder if there's newer firmware…

Syncstation

I just found out that my P800's cradle is a DSS-20 Syncstation, which means I can use it to upgrade Sony-Ericsson firmware! How cool is that?

I'm playing with Anthony's Z1010 at the moment. Wondering, wondering…
