Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Well, what a day! Fortunately I have Lisa to keep me sane, otherwise I'd be a depressed wreck by now.

She was aided a little by tonight's little bit of escapism: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Lush imagery, pure boyhood fantasy, an enjoyable, family-friendly plot, and both exciting and funny bits! It was also refreshing to see such a positive slant on Britishness, with all the leads but Paltrow putting on British accents, and, of course, the British “flying things”. Good stuff.

Tomorrow, labs start again — yes, it's term time. Will I ever write my algorithm?

On which note, an insight: it's all about the data structures. The right data structures make the algorithm elegant and straightforward. Choose the wrong ones, and it suddenly becomes a nightmare of keeping track of things and solving problems. Data structures are the hard part.

Fuck Hyperformance

In the post this morning I got a letter from my insurers (brokers), dated 1st October,
telling me that my insurance was cancelled from the 8th. No more information.

“What the fuck!?” I swore.

3 hours later, after hanging on the phone to talk to someone, I find that Hyperformance had just found out that the insurer had cancelled the policy, because they thought the quote was too low for the value of the vehicle, so I'd just been sent a letter. Right.

An hour of calling round other insurers got better quotes, and things were looking up. Now I'd had 4 hours of stress, and a wasted day. Then Hyperformance call again to say that they've talked to the insurers once more, and it's all sorted out.

Cue two irate letters of complaint.
