Atom and NetNewsWire
I just updated my copy of (the excellent) NetNewsWire Lite to 2.0b6 for one reason: Atom. My OmniWeb “News” bookmark folder was cluttered with BlogSpot blogs that only offer Atom feeds. It's a chicken-egg thing, new protocols. I saw no need to update until there was widespread exclusive usage of Atom — but until I (or, rather, many others) did, offering only Atom was a stupid thing to do. I still think it's rather short-sighted: if you can offer Atom, you can offer RSS (even if it's only through a translation of the Atom, as some sites do; the other way round is rather less common, because if you're already producing RSS of any variety then transforming it into Atom is somewhat pointless, given the proportion of tool support).
So far, NNW seems to be functionally stable, which is good. More relevant to this post: the Atom feeds are indistinguishable from the RSS feeds. Lowest common denominator applies, so what's the point?
Come back, RSS1.0. I miss your triples.
