Two quotes

Chase me ladies:

When finished it will contain 30,000 footnotes and weigh as much as a dog. Not only will it be too boring to read; it will also be too heavy to lift. That's really something to shoot for, isn't it?

Murakami's Norwegian Wood:

“Tell me, Nagasawa,” I asked, “what is the ‘standard of action’ in your life?”

“You'll laugh if I tell you,” he said.

“No I won't.”

“All right,” he said. “To be a gentleman.”

I didn't laugh, but I nearly fell off my chair. “To be a gentleman? A gentleman?”

“You heard me.”

“What does it mean to be a gentleman? How do you define it?”

“A gentleman is someone who does not what he wants to do but what he should do.”

“You're the weirdest guy I've ever met,” I said.

“You're the straightest guy I've ever met,” he said. And he paid for us both.

I clearly picked the former because it's hilarious. The second I'm not so sure of; there are more beautiful, more important, and more stylish passages (not to mention the humour) in the book, but that particular one shouted “quote me”. So I did.

My conversation with Tim link log

I keep posting him cool links in Messenger, so here they are!
  • Great idea— like the random songs meme, but cover the random songs. Genius, and this guy has covered one of my favourite Stars songs.
  • Anthony presents a list of “lovemarks”, brands that make up your life.
  • Astrid is playing on Valentine's Day in Brighton…
I've been doing a bit of work today in Java… everything's come on a bit since I last used it. It's probably for the best that I re-familiarise myself, given that I'll be lecturing on it fairly shortly, and have notes to write!

Time to stop typing and playing guitar. RSI is a curse.

Crucial's odd pricing

According to a this LiveJournal thread I stumbled across, Crucial charges different prices for the same RAM depending on (a) whether you use the upgrade chooser, (b) what machine you pick, (c) what browser you're using. Alternatively, they're dynamically modifying their prices. Intriguing.

The lesson: shop around, and that includes using different browsers. Odd.

A lack of resolution

I'm beginning to think that 5 stars are really inadequate, or I'm going to have to make some heavy revisions to my scoring system.
(The ones I've not rated haven't received enough attention when they were playing, so I don't want to accord a score yet.)

I'm killing time waiting for Jena, JDK1.5, and NetBeans to download. *sigh*

An observation

Song lyrics have something in common with horoscopes. In each, one sees the meaning one would like to see, ignoring the inconvenient details. I suppose it's the human desire for someone or something to understand, or see the same thing, or somesuch.

Personally, I think that songs are both more powerful and more enjoyable, but hey!
