Terrifying

This very well-written piece in the Observer scares the hell out of me. It would be bad enough if I hadn't seen it first-hand, but I remember driving to the pool in the same “village”, driving from one enormous store to the one just across the road, driving everywhere… because there is no other way to get around (no crossings, no sidewalks; only stores, parking lots, and highways). That was in Miami, which at least still has a “center” — I have a nauseating sense of disquiet about the trend for enormous sprawling worlds with no focus, just trips in the SUV between suburban home and nowhere-land office park.
