Books

It's still an odd experience, going into a foreign bookshop after working as a bookseller for so long.

At least it sped up conversations with the bookseller I talked to — the job is the same everywhere. Still, Borders took $130 of my money (actually Jenny's, as my credit card was in my other wallet). In return, I walked away with some things I'd been meaning to read:

• Practical Common Lisp, if not because I need it but because it's deserving, and I've used it on the Web — Peter Seibel needs rewarding for that.
• Cory Doctorow's Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town: gorgeous cover, and I read Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom for nothing, so it's almost half-price!
• Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond: I've been meaning to read this for ages, so I end up getting the sucky US printing. Damn.

And some I hadn't:

• The Tipping Point, as it's my kind of book and it was recommended to me.
• Cruisers, bought on a whim. We'll see how good it is.

It's a pity I didn't actually take along my list of things books to buy… I'll know better next time!

It's good to get back to some reading. I haven't been doing enough recently.
