Long days

I just got home from the office; about 13 hours door-to-door, possibly a bit longer. This still surprises me — that I'd be unconcerned about still being at my desk at 9:40pm — but it's a great way to be productive, and I enjoy it. I have a normal work day from 9am to about 4pm, (which is when people start to leave). This part of the day is for asking and being asked, and I allow myself generous (if not excessive) breaks. Much of the point of this time is to shuttle things around and to make or reinforce connections.

My second work day starts when people will no longer bother me (and I run out of opportunities to procrastinate!), and runs for the next 5–7 hours, in the office or at home*. This day speeds by when I write code: two new features tonight alone, working and tested. I look up and it's dark, I've missed dinner, and it's time to go home.

No wonder the days stream by so quickly!

* About 3 days in 5 I'll be in the office at 8–8:30am, which gives me another hour or two before anyone else is around… handy!
