“Plavix: Because no matter how formidable you are, you're no match for a dangerous clot.”

Sharpeners

A school has banned pencil sharpeners because kids were smashing them and taking the blades out. They're considering giving them metal ones instead.

I remember unscrewing pencil sharpeners at school, 10–15 years ago, to take the blades out. Metal ones won't help, because you can always unscrew them… though, to be fair, in my day we didn't slash girls' faces with them.

I promise not to say “what is the world coming to?”.

President's Day

On Saturday, Elaina and I loaded up her car and took off down the coast. President's Day provided us with a three-day weekend, so we had decided to take in Cambria and Carmel, driving down (and back up!) Highway 1.

The trip down checked the boxes for 17 Mile Drive, Pacific views, winding car-advert roads, and sunshine, and we were in Cambria in time for lunch at Mustache Pete's. Cambria is entirely filled with gorgeous little shops, so that was our afternoon! I totally failed to buy a Santa Fe Stoneworks custom Spyderco Dragonfly with wooden scales… because it was $280. It was very pretty, though.

We stayed in the FogCatcher Inn. It was utterly perfect — an incredible sunset over the Pacific, a fireplace, superb bed, and robes in which to lounge. Dinner on Saturday was in the Black Cat; very good, but curiously they had no steak, and no liquor licence, depriving me of gin. Ah well.

Sunday morning featured more pottering — oh, and the guy in the magic shop did tricks — then we ate a very nice lunch at the Indigo Moon. If Elaina were to run a place, the Indigo Moon is how it would end up, even down to the choice of music.

After lunch we hopped back on the highway and headed to Carmel, which was equally charming. Jacuzzi; dinner at Casanova; shopping; &c. A game of Chinese Checkers ended up a 1–1 draw.

On Sunday night we walked down to the ocean. The moon was nowhere to be seen, and it was pitch black, so the sky was an ocean of stars. And there's not much more to be said.

TransAmerica

Last night, Elaina and I wandered down to CinéArts in Palo Alto to watch TransAmerica. The movie is about a pre-op transsexual named Bree, just about to have the operation, who discovers she has a 17 year-old son in New York. It's a road trip movie, really, but a rather interesting one.

I enjoyed it very much — it was both heartfelt and amusing (faced with a hideous flouncy dress, Bree comments “I'm a transsexual, not a transvestite!”), and it was a nice change from mainstream fare.
