How did I fail to see this before? A proper shell running inside Vim. OK, you have to compile your own Vim, and at present it only works inside Vim 6 in console mode, but it's still awesome, and much better than vimsh. A port is underway to Vim 7 + GUI, at which point I'll be a happy bunny.
