Thick clients

I've been meaning to blog this post about how Windows machines are used for some time.

I see this a lot in my office. The Mac users often have a machine on their desks solely to run Outlook (and the number of people who buy their own Macs rather than use the provided ThinkPads is significant). Most of the developers use a Windows machine connected to the corporate X server, where they do all of their work, or at least have several PuTTY sessions open to a server somewhere. Windows is used as a poor windowing system, and to run Firefox and Outlook.

This even applies to the developers using Visual Studio, because of the necessity of testing on remote servers.

Only the non-developers actually use Windows applications, and a lot of those applications with which I'm familiar are poorly suited for their tasks.

Ah, the wonders of corporate IT.
