Stupid, stupid phones

I've missed 3 or 4 calls recently; the phone never rings, it just gives me a voicemail notification a little while afterwards.

I just figured it out. Windows Mobile is trying to ActiveSync every 5 minutes, all day. If the WiFi is down, or I'm anywhere other than sitting at my desk with the device switched on, it tries to use EDGE. Obviously, it can't reach my Exchange server, so it times out after a little while.

This explains two things:

• My 64-page phone bill, featuring a 3KB data transfer every 5 minutes, every day
• The missed calls — while it has a GPRS/EDGE connection active, it won't receive calls.

I seem to recall calls trumping data connections, but I guess I'm wrong.
