Coffee

Probably the second-worst part of tooth whitening — second to the sneak-attack agonising tooth pains, of course — is the “white diet”, a prohibition against anything that might stain your teeth for the two days after the whitening.

This list includes such American food staples as mustard and ketchup, such Silicon Valley fuels as soft drinks and (in my circle, anyway) red wine, tea (the Brit in me, I suppose), and one of my greatest treasures: the infusion of ground beans on which I seem to live. Coffee, I love thee so.

Don't get me wrong: the problem is not an expected caffeine withdrawal (I was pleasantly surprised to suffer no caffeine headaches in either 48-hour prohibition period, unlike the poor dental nurse I was talking to). It's a longing for the smell, the flavour, the appearance, the associated café culture. Oh, and the fact that if you eliminate all of the banned drinks you're left with water. I drink quite enough water, thank you very much.

I've been leaving my awesome Thermos travel mug at home, because I can't use it, and it would only torment me. I bought a nice little latte cup at Ikea on Sunday… and it's still wrapped in paper, rather than collecting stains on my desk at work.

Only 36 hours to go.
