Overreacting

I just ordered three 320GB SATA drives with enclosures, and tomorrow I'm going to buy a Mac Mini. Home server, RAID 1, backed up onto the third drive. $500 for the disks and enclosures, but I'm really fed up of data loss, and it's a damn sight cheaper than a hardware RAID box, a big NAS, or indeed every other solution I looked at.

From now on I'm going to treat my laptop drives as volatile storage. I'll still back up my laptop for convenience's sake, but the server will take lasting copies of everything I care about.

It might also be useful to have another machine around the house… after all, the Mac Mini does come with a remote control….
