Staying warm

I hate whoever designed and built this apartment. Yes, this is California, and we don't need to have the heating on in the summer. However, winter still falls well below comfortable temperatures (it's currently 44°F, with lows of 32°F — yes, that's freezing, my friends still in Decimal Land!), and this place has bugger all insulation.

We turned the heater off at 7 or 8am because we were too warm, and by 9am the temperature in the apartment had fallen to just above 60°. Thin wooden walls, single-glazed windows, and a thin wooden roof mean we have to run the heaters all the time when we're home. That hurts my wallet, my ecological sense, and my sense of reason, because we really shouldn't have to. You pay for insulation once; you pay for heating every winter.

(Don't even get me started on the hot water… the boiler is about 10 feet from me, with no more than 25' of pipes, and the pipework isn't lagged at all; we have to run the hot water for 5 minutes before it warms up.)
