The albums you should have listened to before you die

Yet another meme.

"Copy the list on to your blog, put in bold the ones you have listened to (completely from begining to end) and then add three more albums that you think people should have heard."

  • Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band — The Beatles
  • London Calling — The Clash
  • Blood Sugar Sex Magik — Red Hot Chilli Peppers
  • Think Tank — Blur
  • This is Hardcore — Pulp
  • Moon Safari — Air
  • Elastica — Elastica
  • Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols — Sex Pistols
  • OK Computer — Radiohead
  • The Kiss of Morning — Graham Coxon
  • Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars — David Bowie
  • The Wall — Pink Floyd
  • Setting Sons — The Jam
  • America Beauty — The Grateful Dead
  • Toxicity — System of a Down
  • Train a Comin' — Steve Earle
  • Folksinger — Phranc
  • Come From the Shadows — Joan Baez
  • Bat out of Hell — Meatloaf
  • The River — Bruce Springsteen
  • The Very Best of Joan Armatrading — Joan Armatrading
  • Copperhead Road — Steve Earle
  • Dark Side of the Moon — Pink Floyd
  • Brothers In Arms — Dire Straits
  • Outside — David Bowie
  • Passionoia — Black Box Recorder
  • Version 2.0 — Garbage
  • Too Young To Die (Greatest Hits) — St. Etienne
I agree very much with OK Computer and Outside (which should, more properly, be called “1. Outside”).

Simon's three:
  • The Complete Recordings — Robert Johnson
  • Absolution — Muse
  • Kind of Blue — Miles Davis
(via Simon Brunning.)

I've put the ones that I've probably heard all the way through in italics.

My choices, in alphabetical order…
  • A Northern Soul — The Verve*
  • Black Cherry — Goldfrapp
  • Country Life — Roxy Music
  • Diamond Dogs — David Bowie
  • Different Stars — Trespassers William
  • Echo Park — Feeder
  • Grace — Jeff Buckley
  • Heart — Stars
  • Heroes — David Bowie
  • Lodger — David Bowie
  • Love In The Time Of Science — Emiliana Torrini
  • Nightsongs — Stars
  • On Land — Brian Eno
  • Rumours — Fleetwood Mac
  • Sleeping On Roads — Neil Halstead
  • Sweet Liberty — Cara Dillon
There should definitely be some Nick Drake in there, too, and at least one of Led Zeppelin's albums, but it's already getting silly! Believe it or not, but that enormous selection was me trying very hard to only pick CDs that have really made an impression, and I would recomment to anyone — to enjoy or just to change you. Pick any 3 of those! If I really had to pick only 3 (which is an artifical limitation for most, seeing as it's “before you die”), I suppose it would be Heroes, Grace, and…, no, I just can't narrow it down that much. Too faceted. Listen to them all — I'll even let you borrow them if I know you!

In other news: from Slashdot's Is the iPod Shuffle Playing Favorites?:

I only have one song on my iPod too. It's by Led Zeppelin. When I hit shuffle play the song remains the same.

Hilarious.

* A definite toss-up between this an A Storm In Heaven, though…
