The stars

I took a walk just now, no more than a mile, to stretch my legs and to escape my odd mood. As always in suburbia, it was quiet.

The sky tonight was an inky blue; the atmosphere obscured most of the celestial show, soaking up scattered light, dyed a deep indigo. Pinpricks showed through, though, yielding the classic starry sky of fairy lights on a velvet backdrop. It was utterly captivating; I wished for a power cut to extinguish the street lights, leaving me a clearer view. There is something very special about an infinite cascade through such time, such distance, that puts things in (to use a cliché) proper perspective.

I saw a woman, also out walking — to say she was promenading would have accorded a grace to the activity that it did not merit — and I noticed that she never once looked up. What a shame, with such a spectacle up there.
