Dock zooming

I just turned off Dock Magnification and Dock Hiding on my MacBook Pro (after around a year with them on).

There are some obvious advantages and disadvantages to these features: more screen real estate in exchange for not being able to see your dock icons at all times.

However, I just realised one advantage of these two settings that isn't obvious to me: the appearance and zooming of the dock is clear visual feedback that my pointer is now in the vicinity of the dock.

With the settings off, I feel like I'm missing a subtle visual cue for where my pointer is. I'm turning them back on.
