Installing Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One
It comes with Windows XP, but I want my terminals!
- Defrag in Windows. The Windows partition is one big NTFS disk. Shut down safely.
- Download a Ubuntu ISO. I used 8.10 from here.
- Download the astonishingly useful Live USB Creator. It's Windows-only.
- Find a free 1GB USB key. Format it to FAT32.
- Point Live USB Creator at the USB key and the .iso.
- Plug the USB key into your Aspire One. Boot it and hit F12.
- Choose “USB HDD”. Hit Enter. Ubuntu's installer boot menu will start.
- Select “Install Ubuntu”.
- You won't be able to see the buttons at the bottom of the dialog. Right-click on the icon at the top left of the window and choose Resize to fix that.
- Select your language, keyboard layout, etc.
- When you get to “Prepare disk space”, choose the first Guided entry. Move the slider to adjust Windows versus Linux disk allocation.
- That's the hard stuff over with.
